“Hard work beats talent if talent don’t work hard. And trust me I work fucking hard. And I’ve got the talent.”
Easy on em 6ix. If the intro to his remix to Desiigner’s “Panda” doesn’t stop you in your tracks, then we probably need to do a pulse check. The power and passion in his voice always gets my attention and makes me want to hear more from this Harrow native. 6ix has come a long way from that calm 22 year-old we saw stylin in I’m On It almost 6 years ago. His focus has always remained on the grind, tirelessly working towards building himself and his team into a household name. He’s made this abundantly clear with lyrics such as “I ain’t neva had a plan b” and “due to be a king in this rap”, which can be heard when he’s asking the listeners “Are You Mad?”
The song features Te-dness, a heavy hitter from 6ix’s 6 Figure Music camp; a collective of artists, producers and engineers, whose music reaches far beyond London’s boroughs. Before you hit the search button on that video, viewer discretion is advised for anyone that has a low tolerance for intensity, flashing lights, and straight sauce. And that goes for the majority of his releases in the past 2 years. 6ix is on a mission to turn nothing into something, and solidify his spot not only as a successful engineer and producer, but also as a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious rapper.
Considering we live in the age of transparency, and receipts are routinely used to tarnish people’s reputations, I have a few that will do just the opposite. 6ix comes from a family of musicians, with his dad and uncle being prominent Revival Dj’s in their community, which explains his vast knowledge and appreciation for music sound systems and the culture that raised him. I once asked him what his dream performance on stage would be, and without hesitation he went right back to his roots with Sting as his response. For those of you wondering, Sting is an event that takes place in Jamaica every year, where top artists clash head to head on stage in front of a massive crowd. If you know 6ix, then you know this is his arena. And if you don’t know, I’ll make sure to recommend a few tracks to help you get familiar.
With cinematic videos, a big sound, and a work ethic unlike many of his peers, 6ix is on a clear path to more success. Rather than fear adversity, he embraces it and challenges himself. He once shared a story with me on a time he recorded a song for Stormzy, for a video that was being shot the very next day. After the shoot, Stormzy reached out to 6ix asking for the finished song, which had yet to be mixed mind you, so the video could be released later that day. Although the request came sooner than 6ix anticipated, instead of making excuses or trying to buy time, he locked in and got that song ready for use within 15 minutes. It’s this same drive and determination to succeed that has propelled him onto stages such as the Love Box Festival, and helped him to receive gold and platinum plaques for recording some of London’s finest.
At this rate, I’m confident in saying his future bodies of work, which includes his One EP (release date July 28, 2017), will make it difficult for him to find wall space for the plaques to come.
