What’s Good With J-Soul?

From Jane 2 Miami, J-Soul has been progressively leaving his mark. With his hit single Slow Wine receiving critical acclaim and getting put on playlists across North America, you should be paying close attention to this young artist from Canada.

Growing up in the west end of Toronto, J-Soul is the self-proclaimed young legend from Weston. Mixing smooth vocals with lyrics deep enough to have you re-evaluate your own life, he surely lives up to his stage name. And to think J-Soul is only 19. I mean for all the disgruntled Hip Hop listeners, this generation isn’t so bad, if we can forget about mumble rap for a minute. Some of these so called kids are really going through some things and aren’t afraid to showcase it in their music in an honest way that resonates with many. Soul is one of those artists, and at the end of the day it should really be about the music right ? Then we have to take note of what Soul has been building over in Toronto.

Adversity has been prevalent in his come up; shortly after finishing high school, Soul found himself homeless. No job, no prospects, just a real passion for making music. In songs like Toronto Plaza Hotel, he makes references to his experiences with poverty, robberies, and his brother’s incarceration. He was one bottle of Old English away from becoming another statistic.

Then, in 2015 November Twelve happened. The buzz from November Twelve landed him a deal with Cash Money Records in February of 2016, taking his career to new heights. As much criticism as Birdman gets for his flawed business practices, his signing of J-Soul was a great move and displayed that he still had his finger on the pulse of what’s hot in Canada and changed the whole course of J-Soul’s life.

That tape was 5 songs long, and that good, that it positioned him as one of the hottest new talents in the city.  Shortly after signing his deal, it was re-released in April 2016 with four new tracks, including hits like Ride for Me, which I think everyone should listen to before making a real commitment to anyone. This particular song, slyly takes me back to 50’s 21 Questions. So I would recommend that next time you’re with that special someone, play them Ride for Me, then sit back and watch. As you might find out they aren’t as down for you as you thought… but hey, thank me later.

With more music and videos on the way, J-Soul is someone to look out for. If you haven’t already been one of the millions of views he has on Youtube, or one of his many followers on Instagram and SoundCloud, take a minute and check him out now. I believe him when he says “its our time just watch”. I think you should too.
