“I told her imma be rich one day. I’m gon be the shit one day”.
I bet she’s asking for the Whatsapp now. Poor ting. And since the release of Stop Lying, in 2015, I can only imagine how many more people are kicking themselves over missed chances with MoStack. Fortunately for him, missed chances might not be relatable at this time in his life. After entering the music scene just a few short years ago, all eyes turned to Mo once No Buddy hit the streets. The track generated so much buzz that by the time he dropped his first tape, Gangster with Banter, his star status was looming. However, instead of soaking up his new found celebrity and getting comfortable, MoStack dedicated a lot of time into releasing quality music consistently, making this Highstreet Kid a force to be reckoned with.
At 22 years old, he already has over 30 million views on YouTube and a mixtape that’s charted on the top 20. Yes, that wasn’t a typo. Highstreet Kid, the mixtape, is in the official UK top 20 charts and still climbing. It’s clear to see Mo has a catalogue of music beyond his years, which explains why artists like Krept & Konan, Stormzy, and Wretch are supporters of his growing movement (watch the video for Liar Liar if you don’t believe me). You would be joining the community of over 9 million that already have once you do.
I remember when I came across his music, because it wasn’t long ago. Living in Toronto, the only international acts I would keep up with were ones on the mainstream level. More recently, I’ve been actively listening to a wide variety of artists, specifically from the U.K. On this particular day, a U.K playlist was playing on YouTube through my Macbook, then all of a sudden I heard “fuck your man!” which got my attention right away. He was doing bits so I had to replay it to make sure I heard all of his chat on that track. Saying things like “don’t you know ugly niggas don’t cheat” and “is it cus I’m too hood to meet your mama?” As rude as the song may seem to some, to me, it sounded like he was just saying what he really thought and felt. I believe that’s the essence of a great artist; their honesty and ability to build a connection with the listener. Because by the end of the song, I’m thinking “girl, fuck your man!”. Before realizing this is just a tale, on a dope beat. It happens.
But his flow, word play and charisma is hard for me to ignore. And then there’s the jiggy bop. This dance move was highlighted on his smash hit Ussy Ussy. Go on his Instagram (@mostack) or follow him on Snapchat (moheco) to see for yourself. He gets the block poppin every time he passes through. Strategy or not, it’s clear people love him.
Mixtape after mixtape, MoStack has proved that he’s not only up next, but he’s simply up. With the continued growth of his fanbase, more confirmed shows on the way, while still releasing great content, I’m certain we’re going to witness this Gangster with Banter become rich and famous.
