Nice for What?

Disclaimer: Unpopular opinion in 3, 2, 1..

Alright, alright, alright. We get it Drake. You love women, and you love any opportunity to use your platform to bring light to current social issues. Kudos to you. In this climate of inequality between genders, and the growing Me Too movement, I completely understand why he felt the need to release “Nice for What”. The song samples one of my favourite Lauryn Hill songs, Ex-Factor, and was paired with great visuals. Don’t get me wrong, I think the song sounded good, and the visuals matched the content pretty nicely. And for those of you who think I may have it out for one of the most popular artists of our time, not to worry, I streamed the song a few times on Spotify. Your welcome Drake. However, I’d like to invite you to a bit of deep dive. If you’re still reading this, its not too late.

I believe that Drake’s message is a tad over the top and very opportunistic. I mean, I get the whole “girl you’re fly, don’t worry about your ex” thing, but to suggest the idea that the courtesy of being a decent human being to everyone shouldn’t be extended, doesn’t sit well with me one bit. I’m all for women empowerment, confidence and the destruction of social inequality, but I am not here for belittling or feeling above anyone. We’re human. It’s easy to resent someone who has done you wrong, or got in the way of your success. And maybe you feel the need to share your happiness and sexy IG photos with the clever captions to match to spite them and prove you’ve moved on. I get it. But just because something feels good in the moment, doesn’t mean it was a good decision. I’ve spoken to many women over the years that have told me time and time again that they’ve faced more adversity and challenges in their life due to their relationships with other women, not men. With that being said, I would never say “nice for what to these women”. As a rational person, I understand that generalizing a whole group based on previous experiences is not the move. I believe Drake is artistic enough to find a way to empower women without clowning men in the process. Great song with a questionable message. He took the easy route. Created a song full of Instagram captions, and kicked men down at the same damn time (this climate makes it socially acceptable to do so). Typical hype beast move.

Come on Aubrey. You’re practically a vet in this  game. Leave the men bashing to the women who have actually experienced the pain, and are truly the faces of overcoming adversity. If you can get past the dope beat choice and witty references, it’s clear he’s just looking for click bait. And don’t get me started on the timing of its release. The day after Cardi B’s debut album? A woman that has made her mark in the industry for speaking her truth and empowering women with her music and her dedication to succeed. Really? I don’t consider myself a conspiracy theorists by any means, but something ain’t adding up here.

Moral of the story: Everyone needs to cut the bullshit. Your ex did you dirty? Move on. Want to enjoy a night out with the girls?  Get dressed, beat your face and do it. Work at 8 am? Wake that ass up and clock in. Listen, some people are just terrible people. Don’t let yourself become one of them. Nice for what? So we can create a society of people that aren’t scorned assholes. I heard life’s better that way.
